The series focused on the lives of three sisters who happen to be witches, and who are known as the Charmed Ones. The Charmed Ones are known within the magical community that exists within the series as the most powerful good witches of all time. The sisters are descendants of witches and rely on the Book of Shadows to cast spells, as well as look up info regarding any evil-being they are facing. Each witch possesses a unique magical power, and when they combine their powers, “The Power of Three” is created. One of the main issues that the sisters face is trying to maintain a normal life (i.e. family, social, personal), while not exposing themselves as witches.

The series has achieved a cult following, as well as positive acclaim by both viewers and critics. The series holds the distinction of having the highest-rated debut episode on The WB (its series premiere drew 7.7 million viewers), while being declared the longest running hour-long television series featuring all female leads.

One of the main changes that occurred throughout the series was when Shannen Doherty, who played the oldest sister Prue Halliwell, left the series (Prue was killed during the season three finale), and Rose McGowan came in to replace her, playing the long-lost-half sister, Paige Matthews.
