Today on November 13, 2013 the last surviving adult cast member of “I Love Lucy,” Shirley Mitchell passes away. Shirley Mitchell played Lucy Ricardo’s friend, Marion Strong, whose character was known for her cackle. Besides known for her cackle, her character Marion Strong was also the woman who set up Ricky and Lucy on their date, with the rest being history.
Besides appearing on “I Love Lucy,” she appeared on “The Beverly Hillbillies” as Opal Clampett, on “The Red Skelton Hour” alongside Red Skelton, “Make Room for Daddy,” “Perry Mason,” “Green Acres,” “The Odd Couple,” “Three’s Company,” “Dallas,” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
Mitchell was married to music composer Jay Livingston, who won an Oscar for best song, and is survived by two children, Scott and Brooke, as well as her sister-in-law, actress Nancy Olson (who was nominated for an Oscar for “Sunset Blvd,” and was the widow of Capitol Records president Alan Livingston). She died at the age of 94 of heart failure in her Westwood condo.
