On December 8, 1980, John Lennon, one of the founding members of the Beatles, was murdered outside the building he lived in New York City, The Dakota, by Mark David Champan. He had just returned from Record Plant Studio with his wife, Yoko Ono. Chapman fired at Lennon five times, hitting Lennon four times in his back. Before the cops arrived, Champan stayed at the scene reading “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger.
