On December 19, 1997 the disaster/ romantic film “Titanic” was released. The film was written, produced, and directed by James Cameron. Based on the famous sinking of the RMS Titanic, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as lovers who come from different social classes, and who happen to fall in love while on the Titanic. Kathy Bates, Billy Zane, Gloria Stuart, and Victor Garber round out the cast in supporting roles.
Even though the film was a fictionalized tale of what occurred within the Titanic (e.g. the love story), it did include historical characters in various dramatizations (e.g. Kathy Bates portrayal of Margaret “Molly” Brown).
The film was mostly inspired by Cameron’s fascination with shipwrecks, and it went on to win 11 Academy Awards, including for Best Picture and Best Director. At the time, the movie was the most expensive film ever made (with a budget of $200 million), and ended up grossing more than $2 billion worldwide during its box office run.
