On April 16, 1971 Grammy Award-winning Selena Quintanilla-Perez, better known as simply Selena, was born.

Selena was often called “The Queen of Tejano music.” Throughout the 90s she achieved 14 top 10 singles in the Billboard Latin charts and was labeled by Billboard as the “Top Latin artist of the 90s.” Some of her most popular songs include, “Amor Prohibido, “Como La Flor;” and her English hit singles “I Could Fall in Love” and “Dreaming of You.”

In 1994, Selena won the Grammy for the best Mexican-American album at the Grammy Awards, becoming the first Tejano musician to do so. Roughly a year later, on March 31, 1995, Selena was shot and murdered by her former fan club manager, Yolanda Saldivar. Her life was portrayed by Jennifer Lopez (in her breakthrough performance) in the 1997 film “Selena.”

At the time of her death, George W. Bush, who was governor of Texas, declared her birthday “Selena Day’ in Texas. Selena has sold over 60 million albums worldwide and was the first female artist to have five albums on the Billboard 200. Since her death, Selena has become a pop culture icon, for her music, as well as her tragic death.

Random Pop culture Fact: Actress and singer, Selena Gomez, was named after Selena, as they are both from Texas.
