On March 9 The Notorious B.I.G. was gunned down…

On March 9, 1997 Christopher Wallace, better known as The Notorious B.I.G. was killed by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. His murder is still unsolved, from theories ranging from gang-related (being murdered by Los Angeles-based Crips), to Suge Knight hiring a hitman, as well as his death being connected to that of Tupac Shakur (whose death occurred at the height of the East Coast versus West Coast hip hop feud).

Wallace was killed on the corner of Wilshire Blvd and Fair Ave in the city of Los Angeles. He was at a red light, inside a SUV, when a driver in a Impala pulled up to his car, rolled down their window, and with a 9 mm pistol fired at Wallace. Wallace was shot four times. Only one bullet was fatal, entering his right hip and striking vital organs. He was pronounced dead at 1:15am.

After his death, 16 days later, his album, “Life After Death,” was released, reaching the number-one spot on the Billboard 200 chart, as well as being certified diamond. He often collaborated with rappers Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and Lil’ Kim, and was married to R&B signer Faith Evans. To date, The Notorious B.I.G. has sold over 17 million albums. He left behind a daughter and a son.

Random Pop Culture: In the 2009 biopic, “Notorious,” his biological son, C.J., played the role of a young Christopher Wallace.
