On August 17 Mae West was born…

On August 17, 1983 Hollywood icon Mae West was born.

She is best known for being a sex symbol during the days in which censorship was prominent in Hollywood, as well as having a career that spanned seven decades. Before appearing on film, she made a name for herself in vaudeville, before moving to Hollywood and subsequently being given a contract by Paramount Pictures in 1932. Some of her most earlier work paired her alongside fellow Hollywood icon Cary Grant, with her most successful film being “I’m No Angel.” Furthermore, due to her vaudeville background, she ventured into music, recording a couple of albums. One of her most notable appearances was at the 1958 Academy Awards performing “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” alongside Rock Hudson.
