Today on November 20, 2009 “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” was released in theaters, a sequel to 2008’s “Twilight,” and adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s 2006 novel, “New Moon.” The movie was released by Summit Entertainment (a subsidiary of Lions Gate Entertainment). The movie was directed by Chris Weitz, and starred Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner as Isabella “Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black.
Like its predecessor, 2008’s “Twilight,” the movie was a box office hit. It made over $26 million during its midnight screening, a record surpassed by “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” in 2010. Overall it went on to gross over $140 million during its first weekend, becoming the third highest domestic opening weekend ever, and grossing over $700 million worldwide during its box office run. Subsequently, the movie made over $180 million in DVD sales.
The movie picks up from where “Twilight” left off. Bella now finds herself as a emotional wreck once Edward Cullen leaves, leaning onto her best friend, Jacob Black, for emotional support. Jacob soon discovers that he carries a “werewolf gene” that is common in the Native American tribe he belongs to, the Quileute tribe in La Push, near Forks, Washington. Bella slowly begins to fall in love with Jacob, healing from the pain that Edward caused from when he left, only to be torn between between both guys once Edward returns. Soon later, Bella discovers that not only is she torn between Jacob and Edward, but that both are sworn enemies, as werewolves and vampires have a history of often finding each other at odds.

The movie was also known for introducing the Volturi, a powerful vampire coven who live in Volterra, Tuscany. They are often seen as “royalty” in the vampire world, helping to enforce the rule that the vampire world must remain a secret from humans, and often have various methods of enforcing such rules. They become aware of the relationship between Edward and Bella, as well as soon learn of the interactions of Bella and Edward with the werewolves, them being Jacob and company.
