On December 3 “Jersey Shore” made its debut…

On December 3, 2009 the reality television show “Jersey Shore” premiered on MTV. The show followed a group of Italian-Americans who shared a summer house at the Jersey Shore, while the cameras captured their antics on the Jersey Shore boardwalk in Seaside Heights, New Jersey — from wild nights at the bars, to fights, to the relationships amongst each other (e.g. the explosive relationship between Ronnie and Sammi “Sweatheart”). The show lasted six seasons, with four of the six seasons filmed in Seaside Heights, while the other two filmed in Florida and Italy.

One of the most controversial scenes occurred during season one in which Snooki was punched in the face by New York City teacher Brad Ferro:

In earlier seasons, some of the most memorable fights were between Sammi “Sweetheart” and JWoww, to which they had various altercations, with two becoming physical:

The show has reached pop culture status due to the lexicon and phrases that the housemates introduced into the American culture, such phrases include “Guido/Guidette,” “GTL,” “DTF,” and “fist-pumping.” Besides amassing controversy for furthering the stereotypes of Italian-Americans, the show itself made stars out of the housemates, particularly Snooki, Mike “The Situation,” and JWoww; while in 2010 the cast was featured on Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People” list.  Besides reaching notoriety within various media outlets, the show garnered record ratings on MTV, and has been used as a cultural artifact in various class lectures at various universities.
