On December 10 Emily Dickinson was born…

On December 10, 1830 American poet Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born. She is known to have lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life in Amherst, Massachusetts. She had a penchant for wearing white clothes, and on occasion seen as eccentric by her community. She often at times would be reluctant to meet her guests, with most of her friendships developed and maintained by correspondence.

Most of her poems deal with death and immortality ( inspired by the surroundings around her), and eventually wrote about 1,800 poems. Her poems contained short lines, slant rhyme, as well as a unique use of capitalization and punctuation. Even though she’s been seen as a prolific poet, only a dozen poems of hers were published during her lifetime. Only after her death, did her work become more noted, thanks to her younger sister Lavina. Her younger sister discovered Dickinson’s knack of poetry, with her first collection of poetry published in 1890. She is universally considered one of the most important and influential American poets in history.
