On January 25, 1949 the first Emmy Awards ceremony was held. The ceremony, which was held at the Hollywood Athletic Club, was created by the Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In addition, only shows that were produced in Los Angeles County were eligible to win, with the ceremony airing solely in the Lose Angeles market.

Random Pop Culture Fact: Shirley Dinsdale had the honor of being awarded the first Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality. She is best known for being a ventriloquist, as well as a television and radio personality throughout the 1940s and 1950s.
