The song itself tells the story of a young college graduate who has an affair with an older woman. The song was featured in the 1967 hit film, “The Graduate,” as well as in the 2005 hit film, “Rumor Has It,” starring Jennifer Aniston. Both films are connected in story, discussing the affair between a graduate and older woman, making the song an obvious choice to reference.

The song was a commercial and critical success, reaching the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as winning the 1969 Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
