On May 20, 1946 singer and actress, Cher was born.

She is often referred to as the “Goddess of Pop,” and known for her distinctive singing voice, as well as her constant reinventing of both her music and image. She rose to prominence in the 1960s as one half of the husband-wife duo, Sonny & Cher, with then husband Sonny Bono.

Her marriage to Sonny Bono produced one child, Chastity Sun, who is now known as Chaz Bono.

Soon later, Cher began to establish herself as a solo artist, with such hits as “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves” and “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Her music video to “If I Can Turn Back Time” caused a stir in the 1980s due to Cher’s proactive outfit. The video takes place on board the battleship USS Missouri, where Cher sings to a large group of sailors, while wearing a see-through stocking depicting tattoos on her backside.

She re-emerged in the music scene in the 1990s and 2000s with her worldwide number-one single, “Believe,” as well as accompanying sold out tours. Besides her music, she started to become well known for her eccentric fashion outfits, working side-by-side with designer Bob Mackie.

She has also successfully ventured into film. She has received recognition for her work in such films as “The Witches of Eastwick, “Moonstruck,” and “If These Walls Could Talk.” For her work in “Moonstruck” she was awarded an Academy Award for Best Actress.

She most recently returned to the big screen in the musical “Burlesque” in 2010, alongside Christina Aguilera, for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

Throughout her career, Cher has was won an Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, and sold over 140 million records worldwide (100 million solo and 40 million alongside Sonny Bono).
