On May 29, 1992 “Sister Act” was released.
The comedy featured Whoopi Goldberg, in one of her iconic roles, as a Reno lounge singer who is placed under protective custody in a San Francisco convent after a hit is placed on her by the mob. The movie also starred Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, and Harvey Keitel.
The film was both a critical and commercial success. It grossed over $230 million worldwide, while often considered one of the greatest comedies from the 1990s, as well as all time (Bravo listed it at number 83 on their “100 Funniest Movies” list). The movie was successful enough to inspire a sequel, 1993’s “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” as well as a Broadway musical that opened up in 2011.
