The comedy focused on a couple who live secret lives as assassins, and who soon learn that their respected agencies hired them to kill each other. Trailer to “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”: While the fun was a success, it was arguably overshadowed with what allegedly occurred behind the scenes. The movie marked the first time Pitt and Jolie worked together, and sparked the rumors that Pitt and Jolie had an affair while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston.
Pitt himself would deny any adultery, but Pitt has stated in interviews that when working on “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is where he “fell in love with Jolie.” At the time, Aniston was considered “America’s Sweetheart” due to her wholesome image (as well as stardom from “Friends”), and many blamed Jolie for the subsequent divorce that occurred between Aniston and Pitt. Soon later, Pitt and Aniston divorced in 2005, and Jolie and Pitt would become a couple in 2006, and dubbed “Brangelina.”
