On June 30 “The Devil Wears Prada” was released…

On June 30, 2006 “The Devil Wears Prada” was released. The film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway was adapted from the 2003 novel of the same name. The film centers on a recent college graduate, Andy Sachs – played by Hathaway, who lands an assistant job to fashion editor Miranda Priestly – played by Streep. Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci rounded out the cast.

The film was a commercial and critical success. The stars of the film were praised for their work, with Streep earning an Oscar nomination and winning a Golden Globe. In addition, the film grossed over $300 million worldwide and has arguably become a stable in pop culture history due its fashion, as well as a cult hit.

The novel and film have been believed to be inspired by a former assistant who worked for Vogue editor Anna Wintour. As a result, it was rumored that fashion designers avoided appearing in the film in fear of angering of Wintour, however they did lend their name (and accessories) to the fashions shown.
