On August 7, 2005 “The Girls Next Door” premiered on E!.
The reality show chronicled the life of Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends (with Hefner making background appearances), documenting their lives inside and outside the Playboy Mansion, as well as shedding light on various other endeavors relating to Playboy (e.g. Playboy Jazz Festival, Operation Playmate — where Playmates visit army troops, charity events, etc). The show focused on Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson.
The show as a considered a success for E!, both critically and with ratings. At the time, the series was setting record ratings, with the second season premiere watched by 1.6 million viewers, and then later achieving 2.16 million viewers for the season three premiere (the second highest premiere ever on E!).
Intro to “The Girls Next Door”:
After season five and having ended their relationship with Hefner, Holly, Bridget, and Kendra left the series. The series then focused on Hefner’s new girlfriends, 19-year-old twins Kristina and Karissa Shannon, and 23-year-old Crystal Harris. With the departure of the original girlfriends (Holly, Kendra, and Bridget), season six saw a dip in ratings. The final episode starring Holly, Bridget, and Kendra was watched by 2.535 million viewers.
