On September 13, 1969 Scooby Doo premiered on television in “Scooby Doo, Where Are You!”
The series, which was created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, was the first incarnation of the famed Great Dane, with various Scooby Doo series’, as well as movies produced afterwards.
The series focused on the Scooby Gang comprised of Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Norville “Shaggy” Rogers, and their Great Dane Scooby Doo; who work together to solve mysteries with supposed supernatural connections. Due to how the gang will come together to solve mysteries, the term “Scooby Gang” has been used to describe group of friends doing similar activities (e.g. Buffy Summers’ friends in “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” referred to as the “Scooby Gang.”)
Recently, in the new 2014 direct-to-video movie, “Scooby-Doo! Frankencreepy,” the series faced criticism when Daphne Blake was “cursed” in losing the one thing she valued the most — her figure. In the movie, she was “cursed” to go up from a size 2 to a size 8. Many critics condemned this “curse” for they believed it furthered a negative body image amongst women when the average American size for women is a size 14.
