On November 27, 1995, the first series of the Power Rangers franchise, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers concluded its three season run.
Debuting on August 28, 1998 and inspired by Japanese super hero shows Super Sentai, the series originally followed the lives of five teenagers as they are chosen to battle the forces of evil with given superpowers. The original rangers included the Jason Lee Scott the Red Ranger (Austin St. John), Kimberly Hart the Pink Ranger (Amy Jo Johnson), Zachary Taylor (Walter Emanuel), Trini Kwan the Yellow Ranger (Thuy Trang), and Billy Cranston (David Yost), as they are given Power Coins by their mentor Zordon to turn into the Power Rangers to battle the evil alien witch Rita Repulsa (with season two Rita being joined by Lord Zedd), whose mission is to conquer Earth. To help battle Rita, each Power Ranger controlls a power coin, the source of their power and reflecting the spirit of per-historic creatures (e.g. dinosaurs), that grant them super human abilities, use of power weapons, and control over machines called Zords to battle Rita’s monsters. As the series progressed, a sixth ranger, Tommy Oliver (Jason David Frank), was introduced as the Green Ranger (and later became the White Ranger).

During its debut, the series itself became a hit amongst its audiences. Some critics believed the show’s violence was not kid friendly, however, the show became a pop culture phenomenon. It sparked two full-length films and helped launch the Power Rangers series, with Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers and Power Rangers Zero continuing off where Might Morphin Power Rangers left off. As of 2015, the Power Rangers franchise is in its 22nd season, with Lionsgate producing a full-length retelling film based on the original rangers.
