On December 5 Walt Disney was born…

On December 5, 1901 Walter Elias Disney, better known as Walt Disney, was born. 

As an entrepreneur, he became a Hollywood and cultural icon, working alongside his brother Roy Disney to establish the Walt Disney Company. Throughout his lifetime, Disney was a prominent figure within the animation industry, known for helping create Mickey Mouse and his friends (e.g. Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Daisy Duck, and Minnie Mouse). Similarly, the Walt Disney Company has been responsible for introducing well-known fairy tales into mainstream audiences and coining the female leads in the fairy tales as Disney Princess (e.g. Snow White, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Aurora, etc). For his work he won countless awards, including 22 Academy Awards and seven Emmy Awards. In addition, he helped create the US theme parks Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney Resort, with similar parks opening in international territories.

As an avid chain smoker his whole life, Disney died from lung cancer at the age of 65 on December 15, 1966.
