On January 23, 1998 “Spice World” was released.
The film, featuring the Spice Girls,” was a tongue-in-cheek look at the lives of the Spice Girls featuring fictional events, flashbacks, elements of surrealism, celebrity cameos (e.g. Elton John, Elvis Costello), with all events leading up to a major concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Due to the group’s popularity, the film was deemed a box office hit. Made on a budget of $25 million, the film grossed over $77 million worldwide, and made an additional $100 million in DVD and video sales. In addition, at the time the film was released in the US, it broke box office records over Super Bowl weekend, with box office sales exceeding $10 million.
