On March 7, 1988 Harris Glenn Milstead, better known by his drag persona, Divine, passed away due to heart complications.
He has been described by People magazine as the “Drag Queen of the Century,” often working with filmmaker John Waters. While Divine achieved fame in the music industry, particularly with the release of various disco songs, he is arguably most remembered for starring in the 1988 musical “Hairspray.” In the film she starred alongside Ricki Lake, playing her mother, Edna Turnblad. Ever since his death, he has become a cult figure, specifically when dealing with countercultures, and has been the focused of many books and documentary films.
Divine was 42 at the time of death, dying in Los Angeles. He was buried in Maryland, next to his grandmother.
