On April 2, 1939 Grammy Award-winning singer, Marvin Gaye, was born.

He is best known for his hit singles “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” “Got To Give It Up,” and “Sexual Healing,” as well as his hit albums, “What’s Going On” and “Let’s Get It On.”

“Sexual Healing” has arguably become one of Gaye’s signature song, winning him two Grammys at the 1983 Grammy Awards.

Another of his notable hits include the number-one single “Got To Give It Up,” which topped three Billboard charts, and became a worldwide success. The song has become an inspiration for many artists who created songs of a similar feel (some even sampling the song), such artists include Michael Jackson, Robin Thicke, and Aaliyah.

He died on April 1, 1984, following an argument between his father and mother (Gaye was protecting his mother), where Gaye’s father, Marvin Gaye Sr., shot Gaye two times. Gaye was survived by his five siblings, parents, as well as three children.
