On May 31, 2006 “The Hills” premiered on MTV. The reality series was a spin-off of MTV’s “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County.” The series lasted for six seasons, and focused on the lives of various young adults living in Los Angeles.
The series began following the life of Lauren Conrad after her high school graduation (seen in season two of “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County”) and moving to Los Angeles. Her move to Los Angeles was to purse a career in fashion as she enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Design and Marketing (FIDM). Throughout the first season, the viewer is introduced to her new friends, her friend Heidi Montag, and her new Los Angeles friends, Audrina Patridge and Whitney Port.
Also joining the cast was Lo Bosworth (who appeared on “Laguna Beach”), Montag’s boyfriend Spencer Prat and his sister Stephanie, as well as Brody Jenner.
Following season four, Whitney Port left the series to pursue a fashion opportunity at the design house Diane von Fürstenberg in New York City, which was documented in her spin-off, “The City.” Midway through season five, Conrad left the series to focus on her own career opportunities, and Kristin Cavallari (Conrad’s rival and costar from “Laguna Beach”) replaced her as the primary cast member. During the sixth and final season, Pratt and Montag were removed from the series due to erratic behavior that made them a liability.
