June 18, 1977 “Got To Give It Up” by Marvin Gaye reached the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The song has become one of Gaye’s signature hits, as well as influencing other artists in developing similar disco classics. Michael Jackson looked to the song for personal inspiration, leading him to create his own hit singles, “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough” and “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground).” Most recently, Robin Thicke faced and lost a lawsuit from Gaye’s family for copyright infringement for his 2013 hit single, “Blurred Lines.” During its release, the song displaced “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac from the top spot, maintaining the number-one spot for one week. The song has developed a cult following, being featured in many hit films such as 1993’s “Menace II Society,” 1997’s “Boogie Nights,” and 2000’s “Charlie’s Angels.”
