The single, produced by Phil Spector and the group’s only top-ten hit, has been widely considered one of the most influential songs of all time. Originally released in 1963 as a stand alone single, the single was later included in the group’s 1964 debut album. The song has endured popularity due to its countless remakes, as well as listed on various lists ranking it as one of the best songs of all time. Rolling Stone listed is as number 22 on their list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” while the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Furthermore, in 2006, the song was inducted by Congress into their United States National Recording Registry, which lists songs that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.”
