On September 14, 1983 Amy Winehouse was born.

The English signer is best known for her deep, soulful vocals, as well as her often flamboyant appearance (e.g. beehive hair style). She rose to critical prominence with the release of her 2003 debut album, “Frank,” as well as her follow up 2006 album, “Back to Black.” Throughout her life, she won five Grammy Awards in 2008, making history as the first British female singer to win five Grammys.

Aside from her critical and commercial success, Winehouse suffered from years of alcohol and drug abuse, struggling to stay sober during her career.

She died on July 23, 2011 from alcohol poisoning at the age of 27, making her part of the famed “27 club.” In 2012, VH1 ranked Amy Winehouse as number 26 on their list of “100 Greatest Women in Music.”
