On October 2 Sting was born…

On October 2, 1951 singer-songwriter Sting was born.

Sting began his musical career in January 1977 when New Wave group The Police formed, before launching into a solo career in 1985. As a solo artist, as well as with The Police, some of Sting’s signature songs include “Every Breath You Take,” “Roxanne,” and “Desert Rose.” Alongside The Police, and as a solo artist, Sting has sold over 100 million records worldwide, won 16 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and Emmy Award, as well as attained several Oscar nominations. He subsequently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000, and inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 2002 and 2003 respectively.

Aside from music, Sting is known for his philanthropy and activism, focusing on human rights causes such as world hunger and poverty, and ventured into acting, appearing in over 20 films.
